Outdoor aviaries are extremely important and beneficial to parrots for various reasons.Parrots are not meant to be in tiny cages their whole life, but sadly a lot of parrots are. While it is important to offer lots of time out of their cage as well, aviaries are a very good option that offer so many benefits. They can offer health benefits, stimulative benefits, mental benefits, and even physical benefits.
The first and most important benefit in my opinion is that parrots get vitamin D!This benefit comes from natural sun exposure that is much healthier and more natural than that which comes from artificial versions of vitamin D.While it is not good to have too much sunlight exposure, several hours in an aviary for this reason with partial covering of the aviary is extremely beneficial to the captive parrot.
The second benefit is also quite important to me and to most parrot owners. The likelihood of boredom related behavior problems with an outdoor aviary along with proper stimulation in toy form, foraging form, dietary form, interaction form, flight form, etc can even reduce the risk if not completely eliminate the chance of feather plucking and other destructive boredom related behaviors.
The third benefit is the stimulation that an outdoor aviary offers. It offers incomparable flight space and fresh air,and the different sounds and smells are extremely good to expose birds to.Desensitization is extremely helpful for birds, but the stimulation you can provide in an outdoor aviary versus the actual size of the largest bird cages that are commonly available are drastically different.
Lastly, aviaries allow for proper freedom of flight without having a bird truly flying freely. This can be added to with the addition of daily flying with a harness and flight training beforehand, but the concept of allowing a bird to fly on its own terms is somewhat different and both should be allowed.
Altogether, aviaries combined with proper stimulation, remaining unclipped and allowed proper flying daily, and a proper diet allow for a much happier and healthier captive bird.
