I was petshopping in my local Pets at Home store yesterday, in town getting my hairs cut, and I came across this little guy! He looks like he (or she, I really couldn't tell) has the sable eye ring colouring? But I thought only hamster had this colouration? Is it still called sable in rabbits? Sable rabbit? by Azayles, on Flickr Discuss!

It's very much like a sable syrian, but it's not considered Sable, in terms of rabbit colors.
It's actually a color known as 'Silver Marten', more specifically a blue silver marten rabbit (: the normal SMs are black, while blues are on the grey side!

The rabbit's color is called blue otter. The otter gene is what gives it the eye rings and color under the chin, on the ears, and on the underside. Otters traditionally have a thin line of tan where the pattern starts and the rest is white. Otter can be present in any color but is only registered in black, blue, chocolate, and lilac.
Mika- silver martens have a pure white pattern, whereas otters have a thin line of tan that fades to white.

Oooh thanks guys so is it kinda like how calico in cats is named tortoiseshell on cream in hamsters? The patterning is the same (and possibly the genetic markers too?) But the name is different? I'll have to keep an eye out for this fella, see if I can get better pictures next time, assuming he'll still be there when I go back

An otter is genetically a blue (or whatever color) rabbit with the otter pattern. The patterns are kind of reverse, if that makes sense. The cream and otter genes are what gives the animal eye rings- but you can't have a solid otter. Also, Umbrous is dominant whereas otter is recessive.

Oh man, I learnt about recessive and dominant genes in school, to the point where my then girlfriend and I worked out what our future children would look like if we had any :-P But I've forgotten so much of it!
