Heyy I'm looking for help for my undergraduate thesis. Long story short, basically I'm making a guide book about ailments of dogs and cats, for local people. I think it's necessary since in Indonesia, we are lacking in good information about pet care in general. Many owners I know are clueless, and everyone is more interested in collecting pretty animal breeds and breeds them rather than their health. And due to this, local forums are filled with people looking for new pets and selling theirs (and even trading:() and informations about care and welfare is barely exchanged. In threads where people post about health problems encountered in their pets, I don't see much helpful answers at all. It's very different compared to good international forums I know. But, my observation of the above isn't enough 'proof' that we're lacking information, and need some sort of guide. So I'm about to conduct a preliminary survey to test the general knowledge of people about their pets. I need help to make my survey questions. What do you think a pet owner should know about pet health? For example, this is what I came up with: - the importance of vaccinations - deworming and flea/ticks control - basic husbandry I want to know your opinion of what does a cat or/and dog owners should know about the common disease you might find in your pet, like how hamsters owner in general should be at least aware of wet tail, diabetes, etc. I'm rather... new about dogs and cats since I don't actually have them as pets, so I have done very little research on them. Since a lot of you have cats and/or dogs, I think I'll have a better chance asking you people

This'll be interesting! Hopefully more members see this and are able to contribute Spangoid has two cats, and one in particular, Shadow, always seems to have some ailment or other. I have a small dog, actually my parents, so they take care of her medical needs, but I often give her any medication she might be on 'cause I'm usually the one charged with feeding her Based on my experiences looking after Rosie, here's my list of things that I can think of right now. (I may add more points as I think of them ) - Correct diet, including what to feed your dog, how much and how often.
- Any medication they're taking, how much, how often, before or after food?
- If they have access to a garden/yard area, are there any plants that may be poisonous? Weed killer/fertiliser? Pesticides?
- Is there anything they can pick up from humans, or even other pets?
Hopefully others will be able to weigh in this Good luck, Paws!

What would you say about the common diseases and ailments an average owner (that had done some research) would have known? Like, they probably know about fleas and ticks, but do they need to know the overview of common illness like mange, ringworm, etc? And uh, apparently free online surveys can only include 10 questions at most So I will be using these suggestions for later survey where I'll be handing out survey paper to people directly.

One quick way to collect reliable data is just to set up an interview with my vet I'm going to some questions about how knowledgeable or clueless most owners are, and asking about common ailments for future references.

Oh that'd be really interesting! If you do that, would you post your findings here? That'd be some great information

Mostly I'd just ramble on since it's probably mostly about Indonesian owners and their pet knowledge status. I don't plan to make it a long interview so I might not gather a lot of informations about ailments-I'll get those by reading scientific papers instead later.

D: D: D:
I'm soooo bummed guys. The plan to collect proof for my hypothesis: "Indonesian pet owners are still lacking information sources about pet care and health" from interviews and surveys had backfired. The results from the interview and survey told otherwise. Apparently, compared to several years ago, there had been significant improvement of pet owner knowledge and their responsibility towards their pets. According to my vet, since internet is much more easily accessible to everyone in the past years, they are gaining more correct informations. And as time passed by, people now has better quality live than before, so they can stop worrying about putting food on their own plates and start paying attention to pets.
As a pet lover in Indonesia, I'm delighted to hear that. As a student on her undergraduate thesis, I'm kinda screwed.
SO..... I think it's highly likely that I have to change the topic for my research D: I'm feeling really devastated right now though.... I have a few other ideas but I don't know if they'll go well. I'll still be researching about animals though, pets or wildlifes. *sigh*

Oh damn! I mean, Yay! But oooh damn! *Mixed feelings are mixed* Maybe turn the thesis around? Write about how pet care started off, well, shit, and improved over the years?

That's just how I feel right now. I can't. We're supposed to find a social problem, prove that it is an actual and existing problem with data, and make a solution in form of graphic design (although it can vary from illustrations, film, photography, social campaign, and so on). But since I've started with this topic, I've chosen a teacher who specialized in illustrations and comics to assist me with my research. I'm afraid I just have to find another problem that can be solved through illustrations. We also have the option to write a normal thesis in which we analyze changes and phenomenon that happened, but it has to be about graphic designs, social cultures, and anything relatable. Not pets, sadly
